Topic: Com port Problem
|
By: Lunar | Posted on: Jul 9 2007 at 02:03:24 PM | I am plugged into comm port 1 on my machine. I have the software set to com port 1 as well, everything is plugged in. The software is giving me a fault for an incorrect com port. everything is plugged in, I have also run all the way down the comm port list and tryed all the different com port numbers. None of them work. am I missing something?

This red text appears when the com port could not be opened by easyDnc. Reason for that are:-
1) the port does not exist. For example if you selected a com port which doesn`t exist.
2) the com port exists but it`s in use by some other program.
The com port you`re using, it is a physical com port on the computer or is it a USB port on a Laptop ?
Is there any other application, maybe a terminal or other DNC software ? (Do you have a very old copy of easyDnc v1 installed on the computer ?)
By: Lunar | Posted on: Jul 10 2007 at 12:05:58 PM | I am plugged into a usb on a desktop. There is no other software on the computer or machine at this time. We just purchased the machine, apparently the comm port on the machine was used before we aquired it. so I guess I am going to assume that the comm port works. We are also using the newest version of easydnc I beleive, easydncxp. I am new to this software as well. are there specific assignments to the comm ports in the software? Does it number my USB ports as comm ports?
By: Support | Posted on: Jul 10 2007 at 12:47:56 PM | This is a strange one.
I have a Toshiba Laptop with exactly the same problem.
The laptop has 3 or 4 USB ports. If I plug the USB/Rs232 adapter in one of the USB ports then it appears as COM1 and, for some reason, easyDnc can`t use it. I remove it from that USB socket and put it in one of the others and that appears as COM6 or something like that where it works fine.
Try putting the USB into one of the other USB ports. Do they all appear as Com1 or can you get it to appear as a different port number ?
By: Lunar | Posted on: Jul 10 2007 at 01:43:36 PM | I have tried to plug into all ports. none of them seem to work. Its almost like the drivers in the cpu arent working right. its a Dell series E521 tower. I have the same setup for a different machine in the shop and it seems to work just fine. That one is running on com port 3. I set this one up the same way, plugged into the same port and setup the same properties as the other. Apparently the last company that used this machine did alot of programming from a floppy disk. I also tried to reinstall the drivers for the cpu, still nothing. I am about as lost as a city boy in the woods, any suggestions?

If there`s no MyComputer Icon then you can get to Device Manager via Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager
(I`m sure you know that but I had to ask just in case)
When you change the USB port while Device manager is open does it always appear as Com1 ?
By: Lunar | Posted on: Jul 10 2007 at 05:00:42 PM | I tried all that. I spoke with a dell technician and they seem to think that the software might not be compatible with the controller. also went right down the list of comm ports and tried each one to see if it works. They also dont appear as a com port, but as a Root port? Dell says that my usb drivers are working properly as well. Could it be an incompatible controller?
By: Support | Posted on: Jul 11 2007 at 02:53:34 PM | If easyDnc can`t find the COM port then the controller doesn`t have anything to do with it.
If easyDnc can`t find the com port it displays text in red saying something like "Com Port Incorrect - Run Setup". If that`s the text you`re seeing then easyDnc can`t find the com port at all so it wouldn`t matter what kind of machine was attached.
As for the Dynapath - I`m not aware of any special requirements for Delta Dynapath controls.
Most of these things just communicate using a standard ASCII/ISO communications format without any special protocols so easyDnc shouldn`t have any problems.
If you`re just concerned that your trial period may expire before you get chancen to test fully then let me know and I`ll extend your trial period.

By: Support | Posted on: Jul 11 2007 at 03:00:45 PM | Would you download and install this version of easyDnc.
http://www.axis-controls.com/install_dncvista30b.exe
It`s an older product called DncVista. it was released a year or so ago to work with early Beta versions of Windows Vista.
It is compatible with Windows98/200/XP as well. The reason I mention this is that it uses a slightly different way to detect com ports so might be able to work with your com port and maybe help us understand the problem a bit more.
Note to anyone else reading this - Only Lunar should download this (Or anyone else with EXACTLY the same problem) DncVista has been discontinued. Current version is easyDnc4.0 www.easydnc.com
By: Support | Posted on: Jul 11 2007 at 03:40:13 PM | When you look in Windows Device Manager you see a list of hardware, Disk Drives, Display adapters etc. Just over half way down the list you see "Ports (COM & LPT)" If you open that then it displays a list of Com ports. Does your com port appear in that list as "xxxxxxxxxx COMn" (where xxxxxxxx is the manufacturer or product name and n is the port number)
Does your com port appear in that list. ?
You mentioned "Root Port". At the bottom of the list in device manager is "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Is that where you see your port ?
Even though you`re using a USB/Rs232 port you MUST see the com port as I described above in the Device Manager area "Ports (COM & LPT). If the port doesn`t appear there then the port will not work.
Did the USB/RS232 adapter come with a driver CD ? This isn`t a Del disk, it`d be a disk which came with the USB/RS232 cable.
