By: Chris | Posted on: Aug 30 2006 at 08:06:16 PM | Is it possible to use easyDncXP with a laptop that has only USB ports?
I have bought a USB to Serial 9 pin adaptor to connect to tha data cable I use at the moment on the `Old` laptop but I could not get it to work when I tried on the new laptop, maybe the cable is not wired as your drawings in the manual?
thanks

If the cable works on the Old Laptop then it ought to work on the new one too.
Try sending data from the CNC to the computer. Does anything appear on easyDnc`s data window?

I read the above post, however, the setup in easyDNC does not provide for a USB connection, only COM ports... like the previous poster, I too have a laptop which does NOT HAVE ANY Serial ports. Also, bought a USB to serial DB25pin cable. Question is how to setup to communicate, what port do I choose? Do I have to configure the laptop differently to get the compter to recognize a USB port as a COM port?
thanks you for any assistance

Once that`s installed the USB/RS232 port appears as a standard com port (usually com5 or com6) so in easyDnc all you need do is select the relevant com port .
If you don`t know which com port your usb is appearing as then you can see it via the windows device manager. (On windowsXP you get to the device manager via the ControlPanel > System > Hardware > deviceManager. Then select the `Ports` option and you see a list of available COM ports. If your USB/RS232 adapter is installed correctly you should see it in the list of com ports with a name or description mentioning the USB.
You could also use easyDnc`s portscan which automatically checks ports 1 to 6.
When using PortScan on a USB port it is advisable to send from the CNC a small program maybe just 10 or 20 lines or so and keep repeating that until the parameters are detected.
