DNC Installer Error: "This Program Requires SP1"

Why modern DNC setup files refuse to install on un-updated or offline Windows 7 PCs in the machine shop.

Are you seeing this error dialog when installing DNC software?

  • "This program requires Service Pack 1 or higher": An installer dialog box stopping setup on a Windows 7 computer.
  • The Symptom: The installation wizard immediately cancels, refusing to proceed until the operating system is updated.

The Cause & The Solution for Offline Shop PCs

In many machine shops computers using legacy manufacturing apps are intentionally kept offline and isolated from corporate IT networks which prevents operating system updates.

The Cause: If your shop PC is running an old unpatched version of Windows without the minimum service packs required by the application the installer engine halts execution showing an error message about missing service packs or wrong version of Windows

The Solution: The shop floor PC can be connected to the network and allowed to update. However updates are often no longer available and, when they are, installing them might break some other unrelated application which depends on that older version of Windows.

Technical Details: How Installer Version Checks Work

For shop IT admins, this check is enforced at the setup engine level (such as Inno Setup):

  • `MinVersion` Script Rules: The installer developer specifies minimum operating system build rules (e.g., `MinVersion=6.1sp1`).
  • Pre-Install Enforcement: Before extracting files or registering components, the installer engine queries the Windows kernel (`ntdll.dll` version string). If Service Pack 1 is not detected, the setup wizard aborts smoothly with this exact message.

EasyDNC Options for Shop Floor & IT Administrators

  • EasyDNC 4.7: A legacy 32-bit application for older versions of Windows. It still works on most newer 64-bit versions of Windows and many CNC operators still prefer this version even though it's looking a little old by today's standards and isn't fully UAC compliant.
  • EasyDNC v5 (RemoDNC): A modern 'AnyCPU' application targeting modern .NET frameworks so has no external dependencies. It installs and runs on Windows XP SP3 or later. On a 64-bit computer it runs in true 64-bit mode and is fully Windows UAC aware.
